Hectoman

Hectoman is a new homebrew arcade game for the Micronique Hector 2HR+, a French 8-bit computer released in the early 1980s.

Inspired by the classic maze arcade games of the early 1980s, Hectoman was written entirely in Z80 assembly and designed specifically around the limitations of the Hector hardware.

Guide Hectoman through the maze, eat all the dots and avoid the four ghosts chasing you!

Technical features

• Written in Z80 assembly
• Designed for the Micronique Hector 2HR+
• No hardware sprites — everything is handled by the Z80
• Four simultaneous colors
• Game loop synchronized with the Hector's 50 Hz interrupt using Z80 IM2 mode
• Software-managed sprites, collisions, animations and sound

Hectoman was developed in 2026 as an experiment combining vintage hardware development with modern AI-assisted programming.

Development was done by KoReYaS Gaming, with Claude used as an AI development partner for Z80 coding, debugging and optimization.

The goal of the project is not to reproduce an arcade machine pixel-for-pixel, but to explore what the Hector 2HR+ hardware is really capable of more than forty years after its release.
